The Washington Wizards Will Trade Jonas Valanciunas to the Los Angeles Lakers

NOTE: This article is a PREDICTION and not a REPORT

The Los Angeles Lakers are actively pursuing trade opportunities in preparation for the upcoming NBA season. Following a relatively uneventful offseason, they are focusing on strengthening the roster to better support LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

Jonas Valanciunas appears to be a strong candidate for the Lakers, especially given their need for a dependable center. With Christian Wood out due to knee surgery, the team has limited options at the position, mainly depending on Jackson Hayes and two-way player Colin Castleton.

Trade Idea

Lakers Receive: Jonas Valanciunas

Washington Wizards Receive: Jarred Vanderbilt, Jalen Hood-Schifino

The Lakers are known for making significant mid-season trades. Just two seasons ago, they dealt Russell Westbrook and other players at the deadline in exchange for D’Angelo Russell, Malik Beasley, and Jarred Vanderbilt. That move revitalized their season and led to a spot in the Western Conference Finals.

After finishing seventh in the West and facing a quiet offseason, the Lakers are heading into the next season without much confidence in their standing. With LeBron James turning 39 and Anthony Davis frequently dealing with injuries, the team lacks the depth needed to sustain a deep playoff run.

Jonas Valančiūnas presents a realistic trade target for the Lakers and could significantly strengthen their frontcourt. The 6’11” Lithuanian averaged 12.2 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 0.8 blocks per game for the Pelicans last season, serving as a key defensive anchor under the rim.

On the other hand, the Wizards could greatly benefit from this trade in their rebuilding phase. Acquiring Jalen Hood-Schifino would give them a promising young point guard who has shown flashes of playmaking and scoring ability. A first-round pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, Hood-Schifino has the potential to become a starting guard and would fit well alongside Washington’s developing talents like Alex Sarr.

Additionally, the Wizards would receive Jarred Vanderbilt, a versatile defender known for his energy and ability to guard multiple positions. Vanderbilt’s defensive skills and rebounding make him an ideal asset for a rebuilding team. His flexibility to fit into different lineups aligns with Washington’s long-term goals, making him a perfect addition to their future plans.
