Tom Brady, fresh off becoming a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, may soon find himself influencing the franchise’s future direction.
But could his longtime former coach, Bill Belichick, join him in Las Vegas? Not everyone is convinced that it would be the right move.
Belichick may not fit in Brady’s Raiders playbook
Brady’s recent investment marks his official transition from quarterback to NFL stakeholder, an entry into team ownership that many are watching closely.
Since purchasing a 5% stake in the Raiders with Knighthead Capital’s Tom Wagner, Brady has been pegged as a possible guiding influence on the franchise’s management decisions.
With the Raiders struggling at 2-7 and recent staff changes in key offensive roles, speculation about potential coaching changes is growing.
This topic came up on Tuesday’s “Scoop City” podcast with NFL insiders Dianna Russini and Chase Daniel.
Russini revealed that her recent conversation with Raiders owner Mark Davis confirmed Brady’s role remains undefined for now, but Davis sees the former quarterback as a “tremendous influence.”
She noted, “You gotta wonder, does Tom Brady have any coaches in mind that he wants to bring in that he thinks could be good?”
Brady’s influence could indeed play a role in reshaping the Raiders’ coaching ranks, and names like Bill Belichick and Mike Vrabel have been floated as potential candidates.
Daniel acknowledged Belichick’s legendary status, but he voiced hesitation about the likelihood of a reunion between Brady and the New England Patriots’ long-time head coach.
“[Belichick] could be an interesting one. That would be wild,” Daniel remarked, while also noting Brady’s close relationship with Vrabel, another possible fit given his experience with Brady on the Patriots.
Raiders culture would be a challenge for Belichick
While a Belichick-Brady reunion might be “wild” as Daniel suggested, it may not be the most practical option.
Belichick, now in his 24th year as an NFL head coach, has a specific coaching style and reputation that might clash with the Raiders’ current needs as they seek stability and a culture reset.
On the podcast, Russini agreed, noting, “This is an organization that could use a good culture builder.”
Belichick and Brady together created a dynasty in New England, winning six Super Bowls before their highly publicized split.
However, that era was marked by a blend of success and tension that ultimately led to Brady’s departure for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Although reuniting the iconic duo in Las Vegas might initially energize fans, Daniel hinted that Brady’s ownership role likely calls for someone more focused on fostering a unified culture.
For now, Brady is expected to serve more as an offseason advisor to Mark Davis, lending his expertise in areas such as coaching hires, player recruitment, and draft strategy.
Whether or not Brady eventually recommends his former coach or another trusted associate like Vrabel, his influence on the franchise’s future direction is clear.
And while he may not have an official title, Brady’s presence signals a shift in the Raiders’ leadership.
