FOURTH QUARTER
After stopping the Colts on fourth-and-2, the Vikings put together an eight-play, 60-yard drive. It ended with Sam Darnold faking the run and targeting tight end Josh Oliver, who brought in the ball at the goal line for a 21-10 lead right before the two-minute warning. Matt Gay added a field goal for the Colts, but they couldn’t recover the onside kick and the Vikings came away with the 21-13 win.
Earlier in the quarter, Byron Murphy picked off Joe Flacco one play after a great catch from Indianapolis rookie Adonai Mitchell. The Colts immediately returned the favor, as Nick Cross sat on a Darnold underthrow for the interception. Minnesota’s defense was able to hold the Colts to a field goal.
THIRD QUARTER
Sam Darnold marched the Vikings right back into the end zone on their second drive of the second half, again helped by an incredible downfield catch by — who else — Justin Jefferson — before punching in the score with a throw to Jalen Nailor. Darnold appeared shaken up after the touchdown pass.
Darnold finally got the Vikings on the board early in the third quarter, completing a long touchdown drive with a throw that Jordan Addison made an impressive full-extension catch on to tie the game at 7.
SECOND QUARTER
Right before halftime, Sam Darnold completed two long passes to Justin Jefferson to move the Vikings into the red zone. However, DeForest Buckner sacked Darnold — the third time the Colts got to the quarterback in the first half — to push Minnesota back. The Vikings settled for a 31-yard field goal attempt, which rookie Will Reichard doinked off the upright for his second missed kick of the night and second missed kick of his career.
Reichard was wide right earlier in the quarter on a 53-yard try. A few minutes later, Colts kicker Matt Gay also missed a 53-yard field goal attempt.
The second-quarter action started with yet another turnover, this time when Darnold fumbled after getting sacked by Grover Stewart. Kenny Moore II picked up the loose ball and ran it all the way back for a 7-0 Colts lead.
FIRST QUARTER
The Colts turned to veteran quarterback Joe Flacco after benching Anthony Richardson earlier this week. On his first drive, Flacco marched the Colts all the way down to the Minnesota 26-yard line but then fumbled on a bad exchange. The Vikings recovered the ball and then gave it away 11 plays later, when Sam Darnold was intercepted in the end zone.
That was the fifth red-zone turnover the Colts have forced this season, and it was part of the reason the first quarter ended in a scoreless tie.
