With their win over the Chicago Bears last night, the Minnesota Vikings improve to 12-2, tied for the best record in the NFC with the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles.
So why are die-hard Minnesota Vikings fans plagued with a heavy sense of skepticism. doom, and cautiousness? Here’s why:
There are 32 teams in the NFL. Twenty have won a Super Bowl, twelve have not.
As Minnesota Vikings fans, we are so apprehensive about getting excited when our team does well, because we have had our collective hearts broken so many times. We have had great seasons, big playoff wins, and every single year has ended in crushing defeat. Every. Single. One.
Sure we’ve been to four Super Bowls, losing each time — with the last one coming a mere 47 years ago.
The team at CBS Sports did a little digging, and discovered why Vikings fans are so tragically afraid of getting behind what looks like a successful team. We could be 17-0 in the regular season — and we would still expect something bad to happen (because it ALWAYS has).
CBS Sports has found revealed that the Minnesota Vikings have the third best winning percentage in the Super Bowl era of the NFL — without ever winning the Super Bowl. Only twelve teams have never hoisted the Vince Lombardi trophy, and most of those other eleven teams have nowhere near the winning percentage that the Vikings do.
The takeaway? We win a lot, but we always come up short when it matters. Hopefully that changes this year.
