Lakers News: LeBron James Expected to Opt Out of $51.4 Million Player Option

LeBron James, the 20-time All-Star forward for the Los Angeles Lakers, has a $51.4 million player option for the 2024-25 NBA season. Although he has until June 29 to make his decision, Dan Woike of The Los Angeles Times is reporting that the decision has already been made and that James plans to opt out and become an unrestricted free agent.

At 39, James is no longer the league’s top player, but he remains a significant force on the court. Despite the Lakers’ struggles over the past two seasons, where they have only managed a 90-74 record and failed to secure a seed higher than seventh, James’ decision to opt out doesn’t necessarily mean he intends to leave Los Angeles. The Lakers are reportedly willing to offer him any contract to keep him, similar to their approach with Kobe Bryant in his final years.

James’ continued presence is crucial for the Lakers, both for his on-court contributions and his ability to draw fans and media attention. Additionally, there has been speculation about James’ desire to play alongside his son, Bronny, who is entering the NBA draft. While the Lakers are interested in drafting Bronny, LeBron has recently downplayed the certainty of joining whichever team selects his son.
