FRISCO, Texas – After drilling four field goals, including three from 50-plus yards, in the Dallas Cowboys’ win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, kicker Brandon Aubrey was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week.
Aubrey, 29, currently possesses the NFL record for most 50-yard field goals made in a single season with 14. Houston’s Ka’imi Fairbairn ranks second with 13 made field goals from long distance.
“I know Fairburn, he’s on the same trajectory this season,” Aubrey said. “It’ll be a close race to the end. It’s kind of like the Sammy Sosa vs. Mark McGwire [MLB home run record chase] competition in 1998. But it’ll be fun and electric.
“I’m always ready to compete.”
This season, Aubrey has made 36-of-42 field goals and all 28 of his extra-point attempts.
” I can’t tell you how consistent he’s been,” coach Mike McCarthy said of Aubrey. “Just the way the football comes off his foot so consistently. Obviously we have a ton of confidence in him…he made all the kicks and the opportunities, and he makes a 58-yarder look pretty easy.”
