On a recent episode of The Carton Show, host Craig Carton suggests that owner Jerry Jones may be preparing to sell the Dallas Cowboys.
DALLAS – In what might be one of the most kooky points of the offseason, Craig Carton of The Carton Show floated the idea that Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones could be preparing shut ‘er down.
“I think they’re gonna sell the team,” the shock jock “reported.” “I think are streamlining finances. I think they are shedding salaries. And I think they are preparing themselves for what would be the largest sale in the history of North American sports.
Carton mentioned something about buyers in “Saudi Arabia” … which is not only made-up, but also a subtle way to stir up xenophobia.
Said Carton, switching from the “for sale” idea: “I think Jerry Jones at 80-something years old would rather give his kids a check for a couple billion dollars and wish them well then deal with a failing football team.”
Wait … what happened to “Saudi Arabia”?
Carton is obviously just trolling for an audience here, but to deal in some facts …
It was the investment of a lifetime. 35 years ago, Jerry Jones switched business gears and paid $140 million for a fledgling Cowboys team. Today, the estimated value of the Cowboys franchise is $10 billion.
In the last two years, the Cowboys have recorded over $1 billion in revenue.
Why in the world would the paterfamilias sell a money-maker? And if the reason is because he’s “tired” (nobody who actually knows Jerry thinks that), why wouldn’t he just let the next generation run it?
And … “write his kids checks”? Why would his kids want one-time checks when they are in line to own a $1 billion-annually money-maker into perpetuity?
While anything is “possible” … Keep in mind, the idea that the Cowboys are a “failing football team” is wrong. “Not winning Super Bowls” isn’t the same as “failing.”
Fans have called for him to sell the team, but smart fans know that ain’t happening. And to be one of those “smart fans,” all you have to do is ignore the trolls and ask yourself this question: If your family had devoted itself to owning the Dallas Cowboys, and was having a ball doing it, while making $1 billion annually and while harboring the belief that somewhere in the family exists answers to someday winning big again …
Would your family sell the Dallas Cowboys?
