Robert Saleh, who served as the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2020, is under consideration to return to the team in the same capacity for the 2025-26 NFL season. After his tenure with the 49ers, Saleh became the head coach of the New York Jets in January 2021. He was relieved of his duties in October 2024 following a 2-3 start to the season, concluding his time with the Jets with a 20-36 record.
Following his departure from the Jets, Saleh joined the Green Bay Packers as an offensive game plan consultant. Recent reports indicate that the 49ers have interviewed Saleh for their vacant defensive coordinator position. Additionally, he is expected to interview for head coaching positions with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Las Vegas Raiders.
During his initial stint with the 49ers, Saleh led the defense to top-five finishes in total defense in both 2019 and 2020. In 2019, the 49ers’ defense was particularly formidable, leading the NFL by allowing just 169.2 passing yards per game.
While the 49ers have expressed interest in bringing Saleh back as defensive coordinator, his pursuit of head coaching opportunities elsewhere may influence his decision. As of now, there is no official confirmation of his return to San Francisco.
