Kelly Oubre Opens Up on His Bond with Stephen Curry: “The Ultimate Hero”

With the basketball dancing through his fingers, sizing up defenders before soaring gracefully to release a precision jumper from long range—that’s the defining trademark of Steph Curry, showcased throughout his illustrious 15-year journey in the NBA. This unique style has catapulted him to extraordinary heights: four championships, two MVP awards (including a unanimous selection), one NBA Finals MVP trophy, and two scoring titles. Yet, beyond being the ‘Baby-Faced Assassin’ with a lethal shooting touch, there lies a deeper narrative.

The Ultimate Hero

As a franchise cornerstone for the Golden State Warriors for nearly his entire career, Curry has embraced and guided a plethora of players coming through the ranks. Among them is Kelly Oubre Jr., who felt the undeniable guidance and presence of the superstar during his stint in the Bay Area.

“I would definitely label him as one of the ultimate heroes,” remarked the Philadelphia 76ers swingman. “He is Steph Curry, without a doubt. But on top of that, he’s just a regular guy. During my time there, I never sought anything from him. I never bothered him for anything.”

The 76ers forward spent just a season with the Warriors, yet forged a notable bond with the four-time NBA champion.

With Klay Thompson sidelined for an extended period due to injury, the Warriors enlisted Oubre as a vital offensive asset to complement Curry heading into the 2020-21 season. The former lottery pick made an immediate impact, averaging 15.4 points per game in his time with Golden State, though he was traded to the Charlotte Hornets after that season.

A Selfless Personality

Despite his superstar stature, Steph was never one to shy away from welcoming others and offered assistance at every turn, whether it concerned basketball or personal life.

“I remember asking him for a pediatrician, which feels a bit awkward to ask a guy. But he welcomed me with open arms, sharing his city and his team, even if it was for just a year. I always understood my role there. Still, I built a fantastic relationship with him… Steph is simply an outstanding human being,” Oubre reflected.

On November 11, the Sixers star was involved in a serious car accident near his home in Center City, Philadelphia, which left him sidelined for 11 games due to a fractured rib and leg injuries. During that challenging time, Steph was among the first to reach out, offering his unwavering support.
